Silverymoon [Flamerule
4th]
The group woke after horrible nightmares,
and got on with a variety of different things around town. Merrell
and Yvandel met up with Deklan, arranged for some training the following
day, and looked around the town to find out what "services"
and magical items might be for sale. Herod returned to the same blacksmith
he spent time with earlier, and spent the day mending armour and in prayer.
Milo visited the make-shift shrine
to Ilmater, and some of the fighters headed off with Blondung to see
if they could estimate some prices for some of the things they's bought
(including a visit to The Silver Scroll). In
the evening, Yvandel did another show - this time to a larger audience -
and Lucretia visited Balnor again
at Fortune Hall to ask about the strange dream he and some of the others
had had. Larz also visited Lady Alustriel to ask for advice about the dwarf
corpse from Kheizar Dalan. Alustriel deferred the decision to the dwarven
clerics of Adbar - but helped out with a stasis spell to preserve the corpse
better. Milo and Ceely got more mushy.
Silverymoon [Flamerule
5th]
After another night of similar nightmares,
the group again had another busy day in Silverymoon. After a somewhat bitter
discussion about who was getting what now that the party was going to be
breaking up somewhat, during which Merrell showed everyone the Torus's
broach embedded in his chest, before yanking it out in a spray of blood,
Blondung started his preparations for an identify spell, a healed Merrell
and Yvandel went off for an interesting training session with a rather eccentric
mage named Veschiul, who was very keen to pass on some of his own custom
spells, the fighters went off to
do some training, Herod did some more work/prayer at the forge, and
Milo again spent the day in prayer at the new shrine to Ilmater. Serena
also met again with Rostcal, to
ask him about the Moonwood. When the group returned to the inn in the evening,
via the Vault of the Sages,
the found Bruenor Battlehammer there,
waiting for them, having heard of their exploits in Kheizar Dalan. He was
late himself, so demanded that Dorn and Larz attend the palace in the morning
to explain what they had found. Ceely sang a song.
Silverymoon
[Flamerule 6th]
Another somewhat restless night with
vivid nightmares was brought to life in the morning, when the group
found their arms covered with strange
moving red tattoos - sigylls of some kind that seemed to be
pulling them to the north. Lucretia, in private with Serena, decides to
try out Torus's broach that Merrell
had discarded. The whole group decided to visit the palace to see Lady Alustriel,
to ask for her advice and help. On route, the group met Vaslin - brought
back to life by her high priestess Aratha
Sul, and ALSO afflicted by the strange tattoos. The Silver
Lady said she had heard of such sigylls before - and related what she
knew - she indicated that she recognised the first of the symbols, and that
she believed it related to a mage named Ssessibil Istahvar
- a reclusive type who lived some 100 miles north of Silverymoon. She places
an enchantment on the party to reduce the pull of the sigylls, and suggests
they do some research at the Vault of the Sages, and perhaps at the Herald's
Holdfast (a place 1 day's march west of Silverymoon). The group immediately
left, splitting up to finish off their
business in Silverymoon and preparing to leave. Some of them attended
the Vault, where they discovered the
possible identity of one of the other sigylls - a female drow priestess
named Gwath from several hundred years ago - based in Spiderhaunt
woods in Daggerdale - far to the southeast, on the other side of the great
desert Anauroch.
Herald's Holdfast
and Von Fedel's Lair [Flamerule 7th]
The group left early the next morning, and followed the map towards the
place where the elusive Herald's Holdfast was supposed to be located. Upon
arriving in the general area however, a boulder being pushed down a cliff
towards them attracted their attention towards a cave some 50 foot up a
rough cliff. As Dorn started to climb up, Lucretia started yelling. A halfling
appeared, who appeared to be Hael, the halfling who had stolen the blue
stones back in Triboar quite a while back. He zapped a wand, causing a swirling
ice storm to engulf the area. Dorn managed to make it to the ledge, and
managed to kill the giant - who turned out to be only the upper half of
the giant - the part that had fallen through the portal that Von
Fedel had invoked several days earlier. Somehow, Von Fedel had managed
to animate only part of a corpse. Half sliding, half crawling, Dorn made
it into the cave, slipping down a slope to crash into a wall. He started
to follow a passage, after the tracks of the halfling. Meanwhile, just before
the ice storm descended upon them, Merrell had used a scroll to enchant
Lucretia, Cleo, Serena and Vaslin to fly, and once the ice storm finished,
the four of them quickly flew up to the cave entrance. In short order, all
bar Milo, and an invisible Blondung, had entered the cave and started to
find their way.
It wasn't long before the group heard Von Fedel, taunting them. The group became split - Ceely became caught by a cave fisher, only to be rescued by Dorn, and then Yvandel got ambushed by the halfling Hael. As the others ran to Yvandel's rescue, Hael, also enchanted to fly, escaped into a hole, rapidly followed by Lucretia, Cleo and Serena. When they got there, they were confronted by Von Fedel and Hael, the latter who lit a magical candle and hurled it, the resulting smoke sending first Lucretia and then Serena into a deep sleep. Cleo, having quaffed a potion of haste, chased after the Strifeleader, only to find he had apparently disappeared into mid air. Larz, having jumped down a different pit, landing in the pool, also followed after her. Herod, still in the cave above, peered down the pit to see the smoke from the magic candle, and casts a dust devil to disperse it.
Vaslin, having finished helping Ceely, also flew down into the pit, in time to chase Hael off from where he had just cut the throat of the sleeping Serena. Had she not arrived, Lucretia would have been next! Cleo returns to the main cave and hears Vaslin scream from another passage where she had chased after Hael. As Dorn gets lowered down by Herod, Yvandel and the invisible Merrell, Cleo chases after Hael, to find Vaslin unconscious, face down in a pool of water. Having determined there is nothing he can do for Serena, Larz raced to help Cleo with Vaslin, as behind him, Von Fedel made an appearance again, enlarging some ants to protect him, and then raising Serena's corpse as an undead zombie to fight for him. Dorn, having brought Luc around, engaged the ants, as Cleo rushes back and hurled the enchanted skull she'd found in Kheizar Dalan at Von Fedel. There was a huge explosion that brought some of the roof down and engulfed the place in smoke and rock dust. When the dust settled, of Von Fedel there was no sign, except for some evidence that a portal had been opened. It is believed that he must have escaped.<SCENE>
The group made their way out of the cave, and discovered that Milo and Blondung had spent over a year and a half in the Herald's Holdfast during the short time that they had been underground, having both met Old Night. Milo had discovered lots of additional information about Gwath, determining her to be some form of drow lich, who had in the past been a priestess of the drow goddess Llolth, a Keeper of the Horde of the Dragon Cult, and also a wizardess within the Zhentarim! Blondung also managed to discover the identity of one of the other sigylls - a lich named Azimer, from the ancient ruined city of Myth Drannor!
The group decided to make camp and continued to discuss the situation into the evening, though found nothing to bring them much cheer from the new information - only that the enemies against them seem to be very powerful indeed!
On Route to Quaervarr
[Flamerule 8th]
In the morning, Serena's body was laid to rest, with the three priests cast
a modified Sanctify spell on her body to help prevent it being raised as
undead. The group packed up their camp, and headed out towards Quaervarr,
traveling safely before finally arriving at he logged area around the village.
Reaching the Whistling Stag,
the group entered into the stables and met the young lads, who were very
surprised to see Vaslin alive again - the last time they had seen her she
had been a canvas wrapped bundle. Entering
the inn properly, the group heard about a werewolf problem from a local
guide named Llairdlangl, who also provided them with information about their
possible routes towards their goal - the Lonely Tower located in the open
area between the Cold Wood and close to Berunna's Well - a small safe haven
where the Black Lion barbarian tribe had settled and become more "civilized."
Into the Moonwood
[Flamerule 9th]
The following morning, the group awoke after a pleasant rest in very comfortable
surroundings, and set out with Llairdlangl
to find the southern end of an elven trail which could lead them through
the Moonwood. Saying their farewells, they moved into the dark tunnel like
trail that led into the true deep heart of the woods. Late in the afternoon,
the group were attacked by giant spiders,
loosing Dodge and three of the ponies. Thunderbolt and Soupy managed to
survive. Later, after walking till it was nearly dark, the group rested
on the trail for the night.
The Island in the
Woods [Flamerule 10th]
The next morning the group continued on, finally reaching a lake
with an island in the middle. <PIC1>
The group became aware of a desire to obtain something from on the island
- something over-riding the sigylls desire to move them on. Walking down
the trail to where it split, appearing to go either side of the island,
the group chose the right route and started to walk along the eastern shore
of the lake, looking for any way to cross onto the island. Yvandel, climbed
a tree, and managed to spot a canoe on the shore of the island. Whilst he
was up the tree, Ceely sang a little sea
shanty.Dorn tried to hurl a grappling iron to hook the canoe, but failed.
Blondung used his unseen servant spell to hook the iron on the boat, and
in a short while the group had made their way onto the island, finding a
natural mooring place under a willow tree. The group started to cut their
way through the thick foliage towards the impressive hedge surrounding the
building on the island. Spotting some dead bodies in the brambles the group
went to investigate, and were surprised when the undergrowth around them
came alive, massive vines and creepers
trying to crush them to death! Through the timely intervention of Merrell
and Blondung, fire was used to kill the plants.
Barely recovered from their ordeal, whilst still examining the magical items found on the dead bodies, the large tree that Ceely was looking to climb also came to life, and started grabbing people with massive hand like roots to shove inside a large mouth that appeared on it's trunk. Both Ceely and Yvandel were severely injured during the battle, and every time a spell was cast at the tree, it seemed to absorb the magic and radiate a pulse of fear instead, causing both dwarves to flee at one point. An enlarged Cleo rescued Yvandel and Ceely and the tree finally had enough of it's "root-hands" cut off, making it stop attacking them. Afterwards, the group discovered that one of the dead bodies appeared to be that of Shermata Chang. Some magical items and scrolls were discovered, together with a letter which almost conclusivly proved who at least one of the victims had been. Dorn started to chop a hole through the hedge whilst the others talked about the letter and Vaslin prayed for guidance. When the hole through the hedge was nearly through, they could see some lions on the other side. Yvandel quaffed a potion of fly, and then, barely getting off the ground and moving painfully slow with Milo's weight hanging off his belt, transported first the Painbearer, then Vaslin and Ceely across to a broken bridge that stuck out from the smaller of the two white towers that protruded from the back of the vine covered mass of the building. Here, Vaslin and Milo tried unsuccessfully to open a metal door.
Meanwhile, goaded by Blondung, Merrell somewhat impulsivly used his wand of fire to incinerate a couple of lions on the opposite side of the hedge, allowing the group to then finish the hole and emerge in safety. The horrific death that the lions endured did not go down well with everyone in the party. Another pair of lions were caught in a web by the flying Yvandel. Ceely climbed into the shorter tower via one of it's paneless windows, and found nothing inside. Lucretia managed to find a window behind the ivy, and the group started to cut a hole in so they could enter the building. Meanwhile another pair of lions appeared, which were intitally chased away by a Herod conjured Dust Devil and the tempted away by a flying Yvandel. The group made it inside, only for a riddle to appear in glowing silver letters. At the first wrong answer, a choke creeper magically grew and started to attack everyone. Fire was used by Blondung, Herod and Merrell, to try to tackle it, causing a blaze which threatened to smoke the party out, but lots of chopping was what finally cut the creeper down, whilst Yvandel escaped outside. Yvandel had an attack of guilt when his lightning bolt caused the plant to become hasted! During the combat, the riddle WAS answered correctly however, and a ghostly woman appeared, together with a ghostly orchestra, and Milo danced with her. At the end of the combat, she danced with everyone apart from Yvandel and Dorn - and the dance healed and refreshed everyone! Time was spent to relearn a few spells, and the group then pressed on. Vaslin picked the locks and opened the doors to what appeared to be a dining room. Beyond that was a kitchen, a store room and some servants quarters - all free from traps. The store-room had a barrell of some form of elven mead in it which several of the party decided to taste.
Searching further, the group found a stables - which they deduced was for Pegasi from the equipment. They also discovered a "garden room", filled with statues of several gods. This room had another riddle on the door - which the Vaslin guessed correctly. Blondung, having cast a spell to detect magic, proclaimed that he knew the location of the Mask of Nobanian - the item they were were being pressed to find, but that it was in the area that Vaslin had previously detected was trapped. Vaslin picked the lock on a door, and revealed a corridor with a pot plant where she had detected a trap. Larz cast a dispel magic spell and disarmed the trap, reducing the pot-plant to a baby choke creeper, which he proceeded to crush. There were further doors however, and traps remained behind each. Cleo touched the door handle of one, and another riddle appeared, which again, Vaslin successfully guessed, her religious studies paying off at last. Whilst discussing what to do, Yvandel read a scroll of dispel magic, aiming it at a different door and room, and Milo decided to test a theory, whipping open the first door, ducking inside and slamming it behind him. Inside this new room, which looked like a somewhat run-down library, several plants shimmered and grew, rapidly animating. The door burst open again as Ceely, Cleo and Herod attempted a rescue of Milo's foolishness, only to get entangled in one of the thorny plants. After a struggle, in which Blondung used his staff of withering, the group managed to extricate themselves from the room, and found that all who have been spiked by the plant had been poisoned. As half the group returned to the garden room with the poisoned fellows, Vaslin mused about the riddle that had appeared on the door that Yvandel had cast the dispel magic on, and successfuly guessed it. The door was however already open, since Yvandel had clicked it open earlier, leaving his foot stuck in it to keep it open. With everyone reassembled, Yvandel, making assumptions about the successfulness of his dispel magic scroll, pushed wide the door, and promptly got peppered by the two thornslingers on the far side of the room. The warriors and battle priests rushed the room, Cleo using the table as cover, and Luc upturning the bed to smother one of the plants. After frantic chopping, the plants were dismembered and neutralisd. Vaslin discovered that bathing in the the pool in the Garden room healed all her injuries, and Yvandel took a plunge as well.
Finally, the group decided to go straight for the prize they had located by a detect magic spell. Merrell also read his scroll of dispel magic, and then Herod and Dorn chopped a hole in the door. Blondung peeked through and cast unseen servant to fetch the Mask of Nobanion that was lying on the table. The mask remained inert in the hands of several people till Merrell tried it. He experimented, wondering if having the mask might make him imune to the plant traps, but found out he is wrong as the illusion over one of the plants shattered and magically grew into some sort of yellow flowered creeper, puffing a mind numbing pollen over him that he only just mangaged to shrug off.
With the Mask of Nobanion safely in their hands, the group retired to the "safe" side of the building, and search around. Merrell finds a book on rats, Dorn cooks a tasty stew, and several people partake of the elven ale from the barrel. For a rare evening, the aches and pains of their adventure, the stresses and worries of their journey are put aside, and the group relax. Milo and Ceely spend the night together, and the others bed down as best they can, using piles of straw from the stables as bedding, and generally sleeping a pretty comfortable night.
The Island in the
Woods [Flamerule 11th]
Healed, rested and refreshed, the group started to make their way
off the island. Yvandel distracted the lions with an illusionary sound,
and the party made a quick getaway around the other side of the building,
only to be contronted by a Treant.
Merrell, feeling guilty for his flaming the lions the day before, quickly
moved forward and offered his apologies, and the treant demands his wand
of fire in pennance. Milo also offered the Trollkiller staff that he'd been
given by the Harpels - and the treant accepted that - allowing the party
to leave.
After crossing the lake, Yvandel summoned a pair of pack ponies to help carry the load, and the group moved off. They hadn't got far, when they were ambushed by trolls, Ceely being dragged into a deep sink hole by a troll. Dorn leapt into the hole to help Ceely, and moments later, other trolls came out of the undergrowth, one bundling Vaslin into the hole as well. Further trolls appeared, and were duly beaten back through spells and strength of arms. But it was a close fight, and Ceely and Dorn nearly didn't survive. In the trolls lair, a light stone and some potions were found along with several hundred gold coins!
Moving on the group found themselves suddenly in another area of the forest - moved enmass as if they had triggered some form of mass teleport spell. Despite looking for some signs of a portal, the group discovered nothing. Picking a direction, they continued onwards, following the new elevn trail they were on until it reached a small, obviously cultivated clearing with a rustic looking wooden cabin. Of its owner, there was no sign, and initially, only Blondung seemed prepared to spend the night inside - but a robin acted strange, and when Vaslin used a spell to speak with animals, beliving herself to have spoken with a druid.
Walking through
the Woods [Flamerule 12th]
In the morning, the group leave the druid's cabin behind, grateful to have
had a roof over their heads, as it rained hard during the night. After a
few hours, they came across a juntion in the trail, and took the turning
heading most towards the east. Another few hours walking, and again, they
reached another junction. Vaslin flipped a coin, and this time they headed
North. After a half hour, they reached an old ruined temple to Aerdrie Faenya.
It seemed to already be the home to a pair of
ettins and their cave bear pet - but with reasonably decent battle planning,
the group tackled them, and even managed well when the other two ettins
and the second cave bear returned home mid-battle. Afterwards, the group
discovered some ancient dead bodies, and looted them for some booty. The
group decided to make camp there, and Ceely went to do some fishing, singing
a soft sea shanty as she did so.
The Temple to Aerdrie
Faenya [Flamerule 13th]
The next day, the group felt that the pull/push of the sigylls had lessened
somewhat, and decided that since they had found some magical items, that
they would spend a day at the ruined temple, whilst Yvandel and Merrell
cast identify spells.
A Tower in the Woods
[Flamerule 14th]
The next morning, the group awoke in the Temple of Aerdrie Faenya, and packed
up their camp. Restless to be on the move again, the group left via the
trail heading east. Quickly however, the trail twisted and turned, and did
not exit the woods as they had hoped. Instead, by late afternoon, the group
found themselves heading west, and passing a stumpy tower.
The tower had no doors or windows. Vaslin performed an augry, and determined,
somewhat ominously, that "darkness lay within" - so the group
decided to give up trying to find the entrance. Instead, the group decided
to turn around and return the way they had come - this trail no longer heading
in the right direction. For a few more hours, they marched, then decided
to camp on the trail.
The People of the Black Blood [Flamerule 14th very late
at night]
Close to midnight, the sounds of distant howling could be heard,
getting closer, and the group were awoken by Merrell in alarm when a herd
of startled deer came running down the trail. Yvandel blocked the trail
with a web, and shorly afterwards, someone fleeing from the wolfsounds came
running. That person was rescued, and through use of an illusion spell over
the web and some good bluffing, the chasers, who it seemed were werewolves
[pic] and Malarites
to boot. The rescued person was a drow woman, who named herself Siellis.
She collapsed, exhausted and was healed by Milo and Herod. The group decided
to decamp and march through the night back to the temple - so at least they
could defend themselves from the werewolves
in a better battlefield. During the battle, Merrell used the power of the
Mask of Nabanion and changed himself into a giant lion, rending the werewolf
foes limb from limb. One of the surviving werewolves was interrogated.
Siellis also came too and spoke about what
she knew.
Truth or Dare [Flamerule
15th morning]
The next morning, after the spell casters had slept late to regain their
strength to cast spells, Herod cast a spell of truth, and the interrogation
of the werewolf Graldir continued. A decision was made to attack the
lycanthropes in their own lair, though they would go the following day,
as otherwise they would find themselves attacking in the dark. That night,
alarm spells were set, and then triggered by some werewolf
scouts, a few of which were dispatched.
Showdown at Claw
Hollow [Flamerule 16th]
Up early, tired from the interrupted night, the group marched along along
the ancient elven road from the temple to Aerdrie Faenya, heading south
this time. Late afternoon, Graldir indicated the spot where they should
leave the trail to head for the Malarite/lycantrope lair. They followed
the hard to see trail, and finally reached the well defended compound. A
big battle was fought - in
which Merrell again called up on the power of the Mask of Nabanion to help
defeat the Malarites. It was a close thing however, and the group were lucky
not to lose any of their own companions. [Mid-battle, I also ran another
April Fools joke - but it wasn't
as successful as the one I did in Kheizar Dalan!]
Moonwood[Flamerule
17th] [Editor's
note:- This is where the game changed to using 3.5 Edition D&D - in
case anyone is interested]
Healed up, the group follow the marked trail through the confusing woods
and make their way back to the elven trail they had left the afternoon before.
The horses were luckily still OK. The group moved on, still heading south
on the ancient elven trail - right into another giant spider ambush. After
a close call, the group struggled on, past a junction, which led to an orc
village - the edge of the forest in sight beyond. The group turned back,
heading north again at the junction, past the site of the spider battle,
and then camping the night on the trail.
Moonwood[Flamerule
18th-19th]
The group continued to back-track, stopping for the night at the temple
of Aerdrie Faenya, before continuing on past the stumpy black tower again
to near the point where they had saved Siellis from the People of the Black
Blood. As they were settling down to sleep, a cart appeared, with an old
man at the reins, asleep. The group had met the Suddersbedr.
Moonwood[Flamerule
20th-30th]
The Suddersbedr was a strange character - who seemed to have a number of
unusual powers. Magic failed to work around him - which meant that the party
were free from the pull of the sigylls - yet he also had an almost god-like
power of beings within the Moonwood. What he said, went. And when he asked
the party to come with them to his farm, the group tagged along with no
questions. When he later asked them to help him with his gardening - it
was as if it were the most natural thing in the world. The next 10 days
were spent gardening with the Suddersbedr, with a couple of trips in his
cart (pulled by the ancient donkey named Hansi) to go watch barbarians killing
orcs and orcs killing barbarians. Finally, the Suddersbedr takes the group
on a midnight trip to see some naked drow females dancing in the moonlight
of the Midsummer eve. After that, he directed the party on the way out of
the Moonwood.
Out of the Moonwood
and to the Lonely Tower [Midsummer Day]
Having walked through most of the beautiful midsummer eve night (the two
Moons, Luna and Selune both full in the sky on the same night - a once a
year occurance!), the group found a place to rest for the day, celebrating
the Midsummer itself by simply keeping out of sight of orcs and barbarian
tribes. Once the sun had set and the two moons had risen (no longer quite
full), the group marched east again, reaching the edge of the Cold Wood
within a couple of hours. As they arrived, the Lonely Tower in sight in
the moonlight, they were confronted by a patrol of six armoured men on horseback.
After their leader (Gundling) sees the sigylls on their arms, he suggests
they come to the Lonely Tower and camp with the rest of the "Knights
of the Tantram Lion" for the night, before heading on to Beorunna's
Well in the morning to meet with Ssessibil. At the camp, they meet with
Gundling's superior officer Barthan.
Beorunna's Well
[Eleasias 1st]
In the morning they travel with an armed escort to Beorunna's Well, where
they meet Ssessibil Istahvar.
In front of their eyes, Ssessibil's sigyll disappears from their arms, and
the other sigylls slide down their arms to occupy new positions. Ssessibil
attempts to remove the sigylls from Larz's arms, but fails, seeming to transform
into a lizard like creature momentarily in the magical backlash. He offers
to perform a divination for the group in the morning, and arranges accomodation
for them.
Beorunna's Well
[Eleasias 2nd]
Ssessibil performs a divination
for the group, and shortly after, they leave Beorunna's Well and the Black
Lion Barbarians behind them, heading off to a destination suggested by Larz
- Citadel Felbarr - a dwarven citadel in the foothills of the Rauvin mountains,
only recently taken back from the orcs by the dwarves. They traveled for
the day, seeing no sign of either Sky Pony barbarians or orcs - common around
the mountains.
